Catching on to Balmainia

I use to be so stubborn about shoulder pads, studs and anything associated with Christophe Decarnin’s Balmain, I could barely tolerate them. But after persistently seeing the look season after season, one can only succumb to the powers of the bold shoulder. I’d been thinking about this project since before christmas but it always got pushed to the bottom of my to-do list since it’s not really ‘my style’ and nor could I find the right fringing/shoulder pads. But I got a little push when I was doing a leisurely browse at Lincraft thinking about what to spend my gift card on (no seriously, a lady accidentally pushed me while I was looking at bias binding and I stumbled a little and landed right in front of these lace shoulder pads). Next came the fringing, I had to avoid anything that closely resembled hair or anything that’ll make me look too Sargent Pepper. Last but not least, the T-shirt, I tried it with some of my own Ts but to really complete the look, it has be sort of sheer. It took me 14 websites and 2 shopping centers to finally turn to good ‘ol Kmart, my last option before Bassike and guess what? They had the exact t-shirts I wanted with the prices seriously slashed down!
I’ve had these pants for a long time, but I never wore them because they were oddly/unflatteringly flared, it didn’t cross my mind until Friday night that I could take them in and make them skinny pants o.O

But I am going to be the first to admit even after all that I’m still not sure if I’ll wear it much, it’s nice but not really my look, it’ll be nice to have it in my wardrobe though ha ha!

Love it. I think the shoulder pads are awesome. You wear them well!
OH.EM.EEF.GEE! And I thought the bandage dress was impressive, this is wow to the power of 1000! You look amazing in it, what do you mean it’s not your look? It really suits you, you’re so bold, they’re so bold, it’s a match made in fashion heaven.
You look great in pants can’t believe all that shit you said the other day about how unflattering they are!
PS. I’m using all my will power to resist commenting in the post below.

Cute outfits
I wish I was Italian so I could say “belissima” or something like that so I don’t sound like a broken record, but I’m not, in fact I have more of a nordic background. But I love the Balmain inspired look and your somewhat casual outfit (which by the way isn’t very casual), lace shoulder pads are so cute!
Hey! Just stumbled upon your blog, it’s great! Love your style and impressed with your sewing/design skills… jealous!

I have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of the statement shoulders either – just not my cup of tea. I think you’re exceptionally clever though, for having made the Shirt, and for altering those Pants so professionally – they look GREAT!
I really love the very last ensemble shot – the nude Pumps are a nice and unexpected compliment to the rest of the ensemble.
